Throughout the course of 2019, I have managed to read novels within multiple genres and across many various cultural spectrums. This is not an intentional act on my behalf, but just so happens to be the way I read. Grabbing what captures my attention, what I’m in the mood for, or what I happen to come across at any given point in the year.

For those of you who also read a wide variety of books I am sure you have seen many of these same topics as well. My plan is to be brief, but I do want to touch on some of the more focused on topics I have come across in my 2019 reading journey.

2019 Reading Topics

(In no particular order)

  • Mental Health Issues
    • There were many books published this year and also in previous years that touch on very serious mental and emotional health issues. This is not uncommon, but I did notice a further delving into these topics more this year.
      • The Girls at 17 Swann Street really got into the main character’s personal understanding of her own anorexic experience and showed an inner monologue that I hadn’t come across before as it relates to this condition.
      • What Kind of Girl pushed the boundaries of teenage physical abuse within relationships as well as self-perception and bulemia that I think is necessary for our younger population to understand and embrace. Knowing that these things are not normal and they should tell someone if they are in danger.
  • Physical Health Issues
    • I read a number of books this year that really explored physical ailments or conditions in a way that I had not seen before. This helped me understand certain conditions far better than I had before and also made their characters unique in a way that only their own experiences can do.
      • Sick Kids in LoveΒ featured the young teenage romance between a boy and a girl with very serious conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and Gaucher disease. Two conditions you never expect to know of a young person experiencing, but really finding a calmness and appreciation for life through their trials.
  • Steamier Romances
    • Not sure about all of you, but I definitely noticed another resurgence this year with hot and steamy erotica/romance novels that just continues to sky rocket. I do love reading these every so often and I’m happy to see more of them.
      • The Edge of ReasonΒ was not only a deep and passionate romance story, but also included a wonderful spattering of BDSM tendencies between the main characters. Done in a very erotic and tasteful way, it was one I enjoyed quite a bit.
      • Eighty-One Nights is another great romance read that wove in elements of BDSM through Master/slave traits, incorporating tools and activities, as well as lots and lots of sex scenes to placate even the most avid erotica reader.

These are just some of the elements I saw in 2019 that I thought were note worthy. Every year brings a greater abundance of novels, genres and sub genres to the likes we have not seen before. I am looking forward to what 2020 has to offer in new releases, but I am really happy to see some other elements in story writing getting a little more focus.

What’s a topic or genre you haven’t seen covered much in books you’ve read and would like to see more of?
