First Lines Fridays is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines?
- Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page.
- Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first.
- Finally… reveal the book!

Happy Friday readers, we’re THIS much closer to the weekend which means LOTS of reading and relaxing. There’s some ridiculous heat wave coming here to the U.S. over the next week, so I have lots of plans to just sit my butt down and do a whole lot of nothing. I’m encouraging our kids to do the same as well.
Last night I started my early copy of today’s First Lines Friday book and it’s SUCH a fun read. Think regency murder mystery; everyone’s trapped in a house together and they all have dark secrets that their host is well aware of. The game, expose everyone’s secret and guess what? One of them is a murderer!
I am loving the thrill of this book. It’s not scary, but a fun mystery to be had!

Now onto FIRST LINES FRIDAY!
The envelope was heavy in my trembling hand. Detaching the golden wax seal, my fingers shook as I slid one beneath the flap.
“Ouch!” My finger came away red, sliced by the thick paper. One drop of blood fell onto the pristine missive.
“Oh, I’ve ruined it,” I muttered, wiping blood off my hand with a silken handkerchief.”

First Lines Friday reveal…….
Murder at Mistlethewaite Manor – AJ Skelly

Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None meets The Gilded Age in this delicious, suspenseful murder mystery.
When Lady Emma Grace Hastings receives a much-coveted invitation to the most auspicious Christmas party of the season—one that comes with a 10,000 pound prize for the winner of a mysterious game—she cannot believe her good fortune.
But as the guests are assembled at Mistlethwaite Manor, the chilling intent of the game is revealed. Each guest has cause for alarm, because all of them have secrets, and to win the prize money, those secrets must be exposed.
Things take a sinister turn when Emma Grace finds herself caught between her old love and her soon-to-be betrothed. Suspicions abound, and old wounds are opened. The dead body in the study does not help. Nor does the raging winter storm that prevents escape from the manor. Emma Grace must battle her heart, use her wits, and put her sleuthing skills to the test to survive the weekend alive.
Because there is a murderer among them.
And no one with secrets is safe.
