Interview with Elle E. Kay

Q: Let’s get started with an introduction. Can you tell me a little about how you first got into writing and what it felt like publishing your very first book?

A: I decided to write my first book when I couldn’t find enough books about the condition I had, Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, so I wrote my own hoping it would help others who were suffering feel less alone. Not long after that book was published, my husband suggested I write a book about Vicky (our goat) who loved hanging out on our front porch. I wrote a rhyming children’s book. It was fun, so I wrote another.

My husband worked second shift, so one night while he was at work and my son was out gallivanting, I decided to write a story. Not sure what possessed me to write those first words that day, but those words became my debut novel, Shadowing Stella. It was a semi-finalist in ACFW’s Genesis Contest, so I published it.

I wrote a bit when I was young—a few stories, some rough first chapters of novels that never saw the light of day, poetry, but I never thought I’d be an author.

Sometimes, I think back on my first grade teachers, Mrs. Kline (I think that was her name). She encouraged me to write all the way through elementary school. That gentle nudge helped me to see that I might have a spark of talent to explore. It took me a long time to do so, but it happened.

Q: What are some of your favorite hobbies (other than writing)?

A: I love to read, of course. I also dabble in photography and piano.

Q: What book (other than your own) do you recommend to everyone that they have to read?

A: For fiction, Hinds Feet in High Places. It’s a beautifully written allegorical story that touched me deeply. For non-fiction, the King James Bible.

Q: Can you tell me a little bit about your writing process? Note taking; favorite place to write uninterrupted; etc?

A: My favorite place to write is our screen porch. I sit out here with my dogs, watching the birds visit the feeders, and breathing fresh air. It’s a mini-paradise.

Q: Tell us a little about what inspired your latest release.

A: My latest release was Grave Consequences, it’s a romantic suspense novel that takes place near World’s End State Park. I decided a couple of years ago that I wanted to write a series that explored Pennsylvania’s amazing parks. I live minutes from one of the most beautiful parks in the world, but unlike the many national parks, our state parks don’t often feature prominently in fiction, so I decided to change that.

Q: Which one of your books was your most favorite to write?

A: The Bodyguard’s Fake Bride. It’s one of my least popular novels, likely because of some minor Scottish dialect that I use consistently throughout the story, but I fell in love with that hero. He is the ultimate book boyfriend. Who doesn’t love a man in a kilt?
