We are getting very, very close to the end of 2019 so I started putting together my initial goals for 2020 as it relates to my reading. In the past I kind of wing each month in terms of setting a TBR or planning out the things I want to be involved in at the time. But what I really want to do for 2020 is start planning out big milestones I want to achieve and then setting some subset goals to help me achieve the big chunks.

For now, I wanted to share with you my “BIG” blocks and then as the year starts to close out I will have finalized all the “little” blocks to achieve each of the Bigger ones.

2020 Reading Goals

  • Start and finish a series/trilogy (Challenge myself)
    • I am leaning heavily towards the Six of Crows series, but I haven’t actually made up my mind just yet (suggestions are always welcome!)
  • Re-read a book I love (Nostalgia)
    • I have a few books that I consider my all-time favorites that I have not read in years. Nostalgia in these books and the feelings I experienced when I first read them drives me to want to pick one of them to read in 2020.
  • Read a book in a genre I don’t normally read (Expand my exposure)
    • I haven’t been reading a lot of Science Fiction or Horror books the last few years. Planning to incorporate a few of these this year so I can get some new and varied perspective in my reading.
  • Read a classic novel I haven’t read (Revisit older writing)
    • There are so many classic novels that I’ve told myself for years I want to read. Then I saw there was a buddy read going on within Instagram for Dickens. I am going to try and join their January or February group and get in an extra classical read for the year.
  • Lister to at least 6 audiobooks (Using more of my brain)
    • I read an article somewhere this year that emphasized how much time we spend in our cars listening to music and drowning out everything about our day. The author recommended that you could improve your overall mental health by listening to more audiobooks and less music. While I love my music, I have found that I feel less drained after driving when I have been listening to an audiobook.
  • Read 5 comic books/graphic novels (expanding novel exposure)
    • As a kid I loved comic books and graphic novels. Not entirely sure why I haven’t stayed as engaged in them as I’ve gotten older but I am going to make it a point this year to read more of them.
  • Read 50 total books
    • I had set that as my goal for this year and I was so disappointed that I am going to end up short for the year. By having these plans together ahead of time though, I think I can avoid letting myself down this time.

Now that I’ve got you thinking about 2020, what are some goals you think you might want to set for yourself?

  1. These are great goals!! I too have found myself getting caught-up in readathons or challenges that pop up month-to-month and forgetting about some of my longer-term goals. I think laying them out at the beginning will definitely help you keep your focus throughout the next year and hope that you are successful in meeting all of them!
