This was exactly the kind of book I needed right now. It was a slow build up that really let you get to know the characters, their backgrounds and why they are where they are. We follow a group of teachers at Exeter High School and delve deep into the lives of Lawrence “Ren” McKinley and Reece Nichols. Ren is actually a character from another of B. Celeste’s novels that I really loved (Color Me Pretty) and it was wonderful to hear his story finally.
I haven’t read a lot of M/M romances, but this one had more focus on the characters themselves and was less about the physical interaction. Not to say that the book doesn’t have a few hot scenes, but it’s not the central focus here and that’s not Celeste’s writing style either. She has always focused on the development of a character’s heart and helping them find what really makes them happy.
Ren and Reece really explore deep into their relationship and begin to understand themselves even better, sorting through their confusing and heart breaking pasts before finding one another. This process helps them learn about themselves and each other in a way that builds a deep and meaningful relationship that they grow on.
If I Could wouldn’t have been the same without these elements and it’s a big part of why I love all her books as much as I do. You’ll learn and love Ren and Reece as they find one another and build a relationship that can test the barriers of societal standards and grow from the ashes of their own pasts into the strong and powerful men they both are.
About the Book:
I never considered myself a selfish man until I met Lawrence “Ren” McKinley.
When pro baseball’s “would have been” becomes Exeter High’s newest coach, it takes one look of those flirty brown eyes and cocky smile before everything changes.
I thought I knew exactly what I wanted out of life until he walked into it.
Now, the only thing I know for sure is that I don’t want Lawrence McKinley to pay attention to anybody but me.
*If I Could is an M/M standalone romance featuring two characters from previous books
About the Author:
B. Celeste’s obsession with all things forbidden and taboo enabled her to pave a path into a new world of raw, real, emotional romance.
Her debut novel is The Truth about Heartbreak.
