This book really just jumps right into it; if you’re not familiar with this one, it’s a Male / Male Romance novel about two young men who were childhood friends, fell in love and life kind of separated them. At 17 they made a commitment to one another that at 18 they would come out to everyone and be able to be together. But… life had different plans and now one came out as gay and the other is still waiting because he’s afraid of how people will treat him. Not that he’ll admit that, but he has an important music career to think about.
Merrick, the musician finally realizes that he may have lost his chances with Ali (his best friend) a long time ago by not coming out. But he’s returned from his tour back to their hometown and is hoping to make things right again.
I loved the emotional characters in this story. It wasn’t just a sexual romance, while there was plenty to enjoy in it, this was more about the emotional connection between two individuals and sorting through their very difficult experiences. Ali was probably my favorite because of how strong and brave he is. While Merrick really had to face some of his fears, Ali took “the bull by the horns” so to speak and embraced who he was and said “the world be damned”. I completely udnerstand the fear involved with coming out and what Merrick would have been going through, but I also have tos upport and recognize Ali’s character for embracing who he is.
Lucero wrote a very dynamic cast that cuts across an entire series of books if you’re interested you can find out more below. But if you’re looking to expand on your LGBTQ+ reading or specifically M/M romances, then you’ll really enjoy this one with two very well-connected male characters and a supporting dynamic that makes you part of their family.
