Have you ever done a buddy read with a group of online friends? I’ve done a handful of them this year and I have many more planned for 2021. I’ve found them to be a great way to socialize online and also enjoy a great read with some new found friends.
I’m finishing up one right now with the #WickandJaneBookClub on Instagram where we were all reading The Extraordinaries and then I also have a one-on-one buddy read with my Instagram bestie Ginnie and we’re reading the Six of Crows duology!
I mean, how many times have you read something and wanted to talk to someone about that crazy event that just left you on a cliff hanger? With buddy reads, you always have someone that you can talk to about what you just read; how much you’re loving it or not liking certain things. Whatever you want to chat about, your reading buddies are right there with you.
If you’re interested in joining some reads, I’ve listed out below the few that I have coming up that haven’t started yet and you can still join in!
December 26th – 27th: Weekend Japanese Lit Readathon
This is a monthly weekend readathon where we all read something Japanese – it can be Manga, a novel written by a Japanese author, a novel that takes place with Japanese themes or settings, cultural or historical non-fiction books of Japan. Last month, I spent my weekend reading about Shinto. This month I’ll be reading Fifty Words For Rain by Asha Lemmie. It’s a story about a little girl who was born to a Japanese mother and an African father. She ends up having to live with her grandparents who are heavily influenced by the need to have a Japanese appearing granddaughter and do lots of horrible things to make her African ancestry less noticeable so it doesn’t bring shame to their family. I expect it to be a very intense and emotional read.
If you’re interested in joining in on this, just stop by @jplitreadathon on instagram and you can find all the prompts and schedules for the events.
January 26th: Discussing Us Against You by Fredrick Backman
This is a buddy read and group chat being held on Instagram. It is hosted by @bryantparkbooks and @debeliahreads – a large group of us will be reading Beartown (the first book) and then we’re reading Us Against You by Fredrik Backman. These books have had some great reviews and lots of recommendations, so I’m really excited to read these. The plan is for everyone to read at their own pace and be prepared to discuss the book on January 26th in our group chat. It’s already been a very lively place with everyone introducing themselves and getting to know one another.
If you’re interested in joining in on this one, reach out to @bryantparkbooks or @debeliahreads on Instagram.
January TBD: Discussing Death in the Family
This one was just announced and the discussion date has not been released yet, but again this is a group of thriller lovers who run this buddy read. For the next month we’ll all be reading Death in the Family by Tessa Wegert. This is supposed to be a pretty good thriller read and I’m ready to delve back into the realm of thriller novels this month. It used to be one of my top read genres and it’s actually been a while since I’ve read any!
If you’re interested in this one, swing by @forthethrillofbooksclub on Instagram and you’ll find all the reading plan updates!
In Closing
Hope to see you in some of these buddy reads and maybe you’ll find an opportunity to make some more friends and get yourself reading all kinds of fun new things! Let me know in the comments if you decide to join in so I can make sure to say hi!
