Libby’s Books

Interview with Libby Kay

Q: Let’s get started with an introduction. Can you tell me a little about how you first got into writing and what it felt like publishing your very first book?

A: Absolutely! I’ve always been a bookworm. I have countless fond memories of reading with my parents and going to the local library. (I love reading so much I became a librarian!) 😉
That passion for reading turned into a writing hobby. I started writing as a kid, doodling little picture book stories that morphed into me as a teenager writing in notebooks that I had stashed all over my room. When I hit my twenties, I started writing outlines and ideas for novels, but I didn’t complete a full story for over a decade.

My first published novel, Falling Home, came out in December of 2022 through Inkspell Publishing. I won’t lie, it was a dream come true to hold that story in my hands and share it with the world. Even now, with the 5th book in the series coming out, it still feels as precious and surreal.

Q: What are some of your favorite hobbies (other than writing)?

A: I love to cook and bake when I’m at home, and since I can’t stay far away from books, I’m usually listening to a book while I potter around. When I’m not at home, my husband and I love to travel. We’ll visit museums, try new restaurants, or go hiking.

Q: What is your favorite strange food combination?

A: Probably anything with pickles. I will put pickles on pretty much anything.

Q: What book (other than your own) do you recommend to everyone that they have to read?

A:  I’m fortunate to live in an area that’s filled with talented romance authors, and I’m happy to sing their praises any chance I get! Kerry Rea, Kerry Winfrey, Jen Devon, Lindsey Lanza, Kristy Boyce, and Jason B. Dutton are romance authors (of varying spice degrees) that should be on your radar! Shout out to my fellow Columbus authors. 🙂

Q: Can you tell me a little bit about your writing process? Note taking; favorite place to write uninterrupted; etc?

A: My writing style is pretty free form (a pantser instead of a plotter), meaning I don’t have much of an outline. I would LOVE to be a writer who can stick to an outline, but I feel like it stifles me when I’m in the moment with a story. I need to have some caffeine when I’m writing, usually a cup of tea. I love to write on the couch, but I need to edit at a table or desk. I always take my laptop with me when I’m on vacation, because I’m often inspired by new places and people.

Q: Tell us a little about what inspired your latest release.

A:  Forever to Fall is the last novel in my Buckeye Falls series, which I’ll admit is bittersweet. This book is all about Mallory, who has been a friend and sister to main characters in Falling for You and Faking the Fall. Each time I wrote her a scene my brain screamed for me to give her her own happily ever after. Her story has two of my favorite tropes, second chance romance and childhood sweethearts. I love romances with history that they have to come to terms with while also embracing who they are.

Q: Which one of your books was your most favorite to write?

A: Hmm, that’s a tough one. I’d have to say Faking the Fall, which is Alice and James’s story. Alice reminds me a lot of myself, with her writing ambitions and desire to pave her own way, so that experience hit me a little differently. Although, writing Falling Home was special, because it was the first book that I “knew” would go somewhere. Max and Ginny’s story was a Hallmark Christmas movie come to life, and that was a delight to write.

Q: If you were to ask your friends or family, what would they say your greatest “Superpower” is?

A: As cliche as it sounds, they’d probably say my storytelling abilities. Not only do I love to write stories, but I’m a talker who loves to weave an interesting story to pass the time. I think stories can bring people together, either to entertain or learn something new. Stories shift perspectives, for both those listening and telling.

Q: If you could be any fictional character (cartoon, movie, show, book, etc), who would you be?

A: Ohhh, this is really hard! I have to say Jo March, because she’s the first fictional writer I’ve ever connected with – both in print and on the screen. She has the passion to tell her story and make her way, while staying true to herself. I respect and admire that. (Shout out to Winona Rider for making me love that character even more as a teenager.)

Q: What advice would you give to a new writer just starting out?

A:  Don’t worry about what anyone else is writing, promoting, brainstorming, etc. Just write YOUR story. It’s so hard, especially with social media, to keep your head down and write the story that’s in your heart…trust me! But it’s so worthwhile to try new things with your writing and find your voice. And most importantly, remember that your voice isn’t for everyone, but you WILL find your readers in time. Writing is a roller coaster, so I suggest buckling up and enjoying the ride. 😉

Q: You have 50 words or less to convince an audience why they should read your books. Go!

A: If you love sweet, small-town romances set in the Midwest with kind-hearted characters falling in love, then Buckeye Falls is for you! Each story can be read as a stand-alone, but if you read the whole series you feel like part of the community. (Think Hallmark movies in book form!)
