My Review:

Genre | Tropes: Regency, Romance, Historical Fiction, Loss and Grief

Rating: 5 out of 5 ⭐

Laura Beers always brings the best stories to regency romance and this new series, The Lockwood Family, is another feather in her cap! We meet Lady Edwina Lockwood and her family (Uncle, Aunt and Cousins) in this poignant story about loss and grief. Edwina lost her father just a few months ago, her mother had passed when she was a child, now she’s living in her childhood home with her Uncle, Aunt and cousins trying to process her mourning.

Her cousin Bennett invites one of his closest friends, Miles Burke to come and stay with them. He’s also processing deep grief over the loss of his late wife and his brother. But through their grief, these two find a desire to want to live and be happy again.

Their romance was adorable to watch bloom as Miles is ever the gentleman towards Edwina. But she’s also a very independent woman, raised by a father who let her have her own mind and enjoy less traditional activities. Which Miles find very refreshing. These two grow closer each day through their grief, but also through the new found happiness that life doesn’t need to stay gloomy.

Part of the narrative is some additional drama over the family funds and why the tenants in the village are getting angry with how her Uncle is handling their needs as well as a mystery inheritance that Edwina desperately needs.

This book has everything from a little family drama in the countryside, to a blossoming romance between two very caring individuals and a happily ever after you love to see!

My Favorite Lines

“It was,” Lord Hilgrove replied, his voice thick with emotion. “And thank you.”

“For what?”

Lord Hilgrove’s lips tightened into a thin line. “Not looking at me like I am broken.”

“Who thinks you are broken?” Edwina asked.

His shoulders slumped slightly. “Everyone,” he declared dejectedly, the weight of his struggles evident in his tone.

Edwina cocked her head, studying him intently. “But you aren’t broken,” she reassured him. “You do know that.”

A flicker of disbelief crossed Lord Hilgrove’s features before he let out a slight huff. “You are wrong. I am terribly broken,” he finally admitted, his voice slightly strained.

Miles couldn’t seem to stop staring at Edwina. Her green eyes held some kind of unspoken power over him, drawing him in with an irresistible force. It was as if every moment in his life had been leading him up to this precise moment.

GET IT HERE:

Lady Edwina Lockwood grapples with the loss of her father when her cousin extends an invitation to Lord Hilgrove to visit Brockhall Manor. She intends to avoid this houseguest, but he quickly becomes a constant presence, much to her annoyance. Despite her initial reluctance, Edwina discovers she can offer support to Lord Hilgrove as he copes with his own grief.

Miles Burke, the Earl of Hilgrove, remains consumed by sorrow after losing his wife and brother nearly a year ago. Accepting the invitation to visit a friend seemed like a good idea at the time, but upon arrival, he immediately regrets it. The only bright spot is Lady Edwina, who offers him unexpected solace.

As Edwina and Miles spend more time together, they find comfort in each other’s company and begin to heal. Together, they unearth secrets that were meant to remain buried. Delving deeper into the mysteries surrounding them, Miles finds himself risking everything to protect her. But can he give her the one thing that she desires the most- his heart?
