Interview with Lasairiona McMaster
Q: Let’s get started with an introduction. Can you tell me a little about how you first got into writing and what it felt like publishing your very first book?
A: I’ve always written. I recently dug out my old school reports and from as young as 4 or 5 years old I’ve always been told I have a vivid imagination, and I’m a good storyteller. But I never really thought it was something I was good at or could make a living at until I tried my first NANOWRIMO when we lived in India. I wrote a non-fiction book about living abroad as an expat. Then my husband got made redundant and we got sent back to Northern Ireland and when we were clearing out the apartment to move back in, I unearthed an old fiction manuscript I’d written during college, sent it to a friend, and she said I needed to publish it.
A: Reading! Can you really write if you don’t read? I’m not sure. Traveling, when I can afford it. Baking, singing, the occasional game of Uno, Five Crowns, and Mario Kart with my ten year old, hanging out with friends, going to see movies. I’m not an outdoorsy kind of person, but I’ll do it if I have to!
Q: What is your favorite strange food combination?
A: I don’t like egg yolks if they’re fried, or boiled, or poached. I’ll eat them if they’re scrambled, or in cake (obviously). My friends call it ‘The Egg Thing’ LOL Otherwise I like m&ms in my popcorn but people here think that’s strange.
Q: What book (other than your own) do you recommend to everyone that they have to read?
A: Ooof… this is a hard one because not every book is for every reader. I love Pride and Prejudice, it’s my favorite book of all time. More recently I’ve loved Butcher and Blackbird, it’s a witty love story about serial killers and not something I thought I’d have enjoyed. I also love A Kiss of Iron by Clare Sager. If you like shadow daddies, fae, and delicious spice, Clare brings it.
Q: Can you tell me a little bit about your writing process? Note taking; favorite place to write uninterrupted; etc?
A: I think it’s a hard question to ask writers, because I know for my friends and I, our processes are constantly changing, adapting, and updating. Right now I live in a small, two-bedroom apartment, my ‘office’ is a two foot long desk next to my bed and it’s where I work most often.
On Mondays, I co-work with a local author friend, we go to the same cafe we’ve gone to since January 2023, we have breakfast and lunch there, and we write until around 1.30pm. You’d think that being in such a busy and chaotic place would mean I don’t get much work done but it’s often my most productive day of the week.
Once a month I go to another local place to meet a friend for brunch. I go an hour early and get some words down. If I ever get stuck in a manuscript, my editor tells me to change location, so I take my laptop up the coast and sit by the water and write.
I almost always listen to music while I write. Music is one of my main love languages. And I’m somewhere between a plotter and a pantser. I like to have a structure for my book, but I can’t have a fully fleshed out plot before I start because my characters flip it off and tell me they’re not sticking to it.
And yes, I know how weird that sounds!
Q: Tell us a little about what inspired your latest release.
A: I’ve had a busy summer. I had four releases in a seven week period. It was a chaotic summer that I shall not be repeating. My latest full-length hockey romance was called Dropping the Mitts. I went to watch Aubrey Gordon’s documentary ‘Your Fat Friend’ and was inspired to write a tall, fat woman, who was unapologetic in her fatness, and whose leading man didn’t try to change her. Her fatness is a part of her, but it’s not her entire story, and I think that’s what society seems to forget, that just because a fat person is fat, doesn’t mean that’s all we are.
The hero also has his own journey, he’s on track to be an NHL star once he graduates, but he takes a puck to the face, has to take an extended leave from the game, and has to deal with what his life looks like when hockey is taken away from him.
It was quite a doozy to write.
Love can blur even the fiercest of rivalries.
Penelope
When I kiss a guy dressed as Pacman at a party, it feels like fate. But fate must have a twisted sense of humor—because falling for the son of the man who ruined my family was never part of the plan.
Tate Myers, star hockey player and my sworn enemy, ignites a hate in me that’s hotter than any slapshot. Yet the heart wants what it wants—even if it means crossing every line I’ve drawn.
Tate
Getting snubbed by a chick dressed as Taco Belle at a party sucked almost as much as taking a slapshot to the face. My jaw and my world shatter, but the tall, curvy goddess next door keeps me afloat with her pranks.
I have no idea why she hates me, but right now, I hate myself, too. This is my second chance at making her fall for me, and I’m determined to win her over.
Q: Which one of your books was your most favorite to write?
A: I think there’s always going to be a special place in my heart for Cleo and Linc; AKA: Clinc from book 1 in my Snow Pirates series, Two for Interference. She’s a curvy bookworm, he’s a jock who’s a closet author. And they share a chocolate cupcake. It’s Pride and Prejudice meets You’ve Got Mail. It’ll always be a fave.
Q: If you were to ask your friends or family, what would they say your greatest “Superpower” is?
A: I can walk into a room full of strangers and come back out with at least a couple of new friends in my circle. I’m a social butterfly and love meeting and getting to know people. I also like connecting people I meet with other people I know who I think they’d like. My friends call me a web weaver.
Q: If you could be any fictional character (cartoon, movie, show, book, etc), who would you be?
A: Uh Elena Gilbert so I can bang Damon Salvatore. Can I say that? I don’t care, I’m saying that. LOL!
Q: What advice would you give to a new writer just starting out?
A: Don’t try to reinvent the mold, the mold is the mold for a reason. Find your brand and make it strong. Double down on what works, leave behind what doesn’t. Research, research, research. Don’t just write a book and throw it into the world and expect things to happen, they won’t (ask me how I know!!!) Find your comp authors (authors who write books close to what you write) and align with them pretty hard from the get go. The list is endless because I’ve made all the mistakes in the book. Ha. Book.
Q: You have 50 words or less to convince an audience why they should read your books. Go!
A: Because I like to eat food? Wait, no, that’s probably not what you want, right?
I write inclusive, diverse, and real romance. I write feelings, mental health, and a whole lot of heart. I can often make you laugh and cry on the same page, and I leave a little piece of my soul in each and every one of my books.
That’s 47 words, if you add “I like food” that makes 50 😉
