MY REVIEW:

Genre | Tropes: Historical, Romance, Regency, Clean, Closed Door

Rating: 5 out of 5 ⭐

What a stunning tale of regency mystery and romance! Lily Adler is a wonderful character and a personality that I would aspire to. She is written as an older woman, widowed, but so very confidant in herself and an astute investigator that she finds herself embroiled in London’s mysteries time and again. This is the fifth book in a series all about her investigative adventures.

Everything about this book was wonderful, from the eloquent writing of the London scenery, to the unique caricatures of each and every character, to the details laid out in the investigation. There were many times I thought I had the entire investigation sorted out in my head, only to find myself examining new clues alongside Lily and attempting to understand the connections.

Alongside the murder mystery elements, I adored Lily’s friends and social life, as well as her complicated love interest. As a widow, her late husband was in the navy and his lifetime best friend, as well as someone Lily has known her whole life, is now the man she cares most for. But the memory of her late husband holds her back from acting on anything. But now that so many years have past since his death, she’s finally entertaining the idea of letting herself love again.

An impressive use of detail can be found in this book and I felt completely immersed in regency London the entire time. Able to settle in and be whisked away to fanciful soirees, district slums and card houses, as well as opulent homes filled with love and care.

I admired the character of Lily deeply though, this is the major connection in this story. She’s incredibly smart, confident in herself, and witty all the way through. She faces deadly situations with the strength of a lioness and lets no one treat her badly. No matter what etiquette might call for. But she also knows how to hold back and let others reveal themselves. She really is the perfect character creation that I will always look up to.

Since I have not read the other books in this series, I now need to read them all!

If you really enjoy reading anything in the regency era and love a good crime investigation, then you need this book right away!

A Lily Adler Mystery

Sometimes danger lurks in plain sight, and in the cutthroat London Season socialite Lily Adler must race against time to catch a killer.

Fans of Bridgerton will delight in this Regency-era mystery featuring an intrepid sleuth, plenty of intrigue, and a touch of romance.

London, 1817. The London Season is beginning once more, and Lily Adler’s return to her home on Half Moon Street feels different this year. No longer a recent widow, she has a life and friends waiting for her. Lily also has new responsibilities in the form of her protégée Amelia, the sister of her longtime friend Jack Hartley, who is escaping her own brush with scandal and murder.

It doesn’t take long for Lily’s growing reputation as a lady of quality who can discreetly find what is missing or solve what is puzzling to bring a desperate young woman to her doorstep. But helping her means unraveling a tangled web of family secrets. Soon, a missing will, a dead body and the threat of blackmail leave Lily facing danger every way she turns.

The glittering society of Mayfair conceals many secrets, and the back alleys of London hide even more. Lily Adler will need to find the connection between them quickly if she wants to stop a killer before it’s too late.
