My Review:

Genre | Tropes: Regency, Romance, Historical Fiction, Enemies to Lovers

Rating: 5 out of 5 ⭐

Winston and Mattie were absolute perfection! We got a taste of their interactions in the previous book in this series and I had already fallen for them then. Now we get them as the main focus and their warring ways with one another is starting to come to an end. They were friends as children, Mattie being the vicar’s daughter and living right by Winston’s manor. But as they grew up and attraction grew between them, an animosity built up that they’ve been stuck within for some time now. Always seeming to argue and not get along, they decided on a truce to keep things amicable between them.

But in the background, suspense is building as Winston’s activities to keep his own family safe are starting to interfere with everyone around him. An estranged Aunt is hiding from her abusive husband, and that husband has arrived to threaten them all and collect his wife. Which means Winston and Mattie find themselves in the middle of some serious danger.

The growing friendship between Winston and Mattie was wonderful to watch unfold. He carries so much anger at himself for things that have happened while being a barrister, and Mattie is carrying her own scars from the loss of her mother when she was young and the current loss of her Aunt and Uncle. Mattie is twenty one and never debuted into society either, with her Uncle gone and her father inheriting the family title, everything is changing for Mattie’s family.

Their friendship and growing relationship was filled with a lot of misunderstandings and moment of deep reflection. On their own behaviors and learning how to listen to others. Sometimes our own scars make it hard for us to know how others truly see us. Winston and Mattie were a wonderful reminder that it’s important to take your time and listen to what people are saying and what they’re not saying.

My Favorite Lines

“I’m afraid if I let you in, I will never let you go,” he admitted, his voice barely more than a whisper.

The person he despised most could turn out to be his greatest chance at love.

Lord Winston Lockwood is haunted by his past and bound by social expectations. He remains at Brockhall Manor to ensure his aunt and her son remain safe from her abusive husband. Adding to his frustration, Miss Bawden’s constant presence threatens to drive him mad.

Amid the upheaval of her father’s newfound title, Miss Mattie Bawden is struggling to help her cousin cope with the tragic loss of her parents. Desperate for assistance, she turns to the last person she would ever the insufferable Lord Winston.

As they call a truce, they soon realize how indubitably well-suited they are as friends. But when a dire threat looms, bringing danger to their very doorsteps, Winston understands he must confront his own feelings and risk revealing his true emotions, or he could lose the woman he has come to realize he cannot live without.

As the third novel in the series by author Laura Beers, The Gentleman’s Miscalculation continues The Lockwood Family series. This is a light-hearted, clean and wholesome romance set in the Regency era. All books in this series have their own Happily-Ever-After and are best enjoyed in proper order.
