This was such a fun story to read! It has a Cinderella-esque feel to it as Amelia is the only daughter of her father’s from his first wife. She lives with father, step-mother and step-sisters. Outside of her father, the rest of the family doesn’t really like her and are kind of mean to her on most days. She has an oriental look to her and knows that her mother was Chinese, but doesn’t really know much else other than the stories her father has shared about her royal parentage.
As Amelia finds out she’s been promised to a tradesman by her father and step-mother to obtain better relations for the fathers involved, she’s resolved to run away and find answers about her mother. Her travels take her through her own history and self discovery, all the while paired with a friendly tradesman she met at the docks.
As their journey unfolds, she and Jacob finds themselves realizing their attraction to one another, even though they’re both promised to someone else. This was the element of the story that I loved the most. Neither one realizes for a while that they are actually betrothed to each other, but as the reader we know this very early on, and it was enchanting to watch them grow to know one another and fall deeply into love without realizing any of it.
Jacob and Amelia will warm your heart and you’ll have fun on their adventure gallivanting around London to find answers about Amelia’s mother!

*****
She flees an arranged marriage in quest of her past, but she just might discover her future instead.
Born in faraway Canton yet raised in England, Amelia Fitzwater has always fallen just short of being a true lady, even if she were the niece of an earl. But when her stepmother despises her enough to arrange her in marriage to an upstart tradesman’s son, Amelia gathers her things and steals away on a quest for her late mother’s Chinese roots.
Jacob Hawthorne is just about to spread his wings when his mercenary father insists on pinning him down in marriage. With his bachelor days dwindling, Jacob uncharacteristically agrees to escort the bewitching, mysterious stranger he finds at the London Docks on one last, grand adventure and chance at a purposeful life.
When dangers and disappointments bind them together in friendship and more, Jacob and Amelia gradually discover that what they’re running away from and what they’re careening towards might just be the very same thing.
A sweet Regency historical romance with a plucky heroine, a dashing hero, and a highwayman or two. Part of the Cousins of Cavendish Square series, which can be read as standalone novels and in any order.
Other books in the series are:
The Discarded Companion by Rosanne E Lortz

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Iris Lim
Iris grew up reading and rereading every novel in her small family library in Southeast Asia. Her favorite authors have always included Jane Austen, C. S. Lewis, and Agatha Christie. Now, thanks to modern technology, she gets to breathe life into her own creations and re-imaginations, living out her forever-love for all things romance.
When she’s not writing or reading, Iris is probably wrangling her adorable twins, chilling with her husband, or burning her latest meal. She dreams every day to save up for a trip to England and to write all she can about that. She has a love-hate relationship with plot bunnies, who are alternately her greatest enemies and most beloved friends, depending on the day of the week.
