My Thoughts:

I read all three books in Christie’s series that crosses with this new one and it was wonderful and nostalgic to revisit the place of these stories. This series focuses on two homesteads and families that have known each other their entire lives. Early pioneers of Wyoming and extremely independent individuals, but they all focus on helping one another.

Cora’s family recently got smaller when her father and mother passed away and Cora was left with the burden of helping her older brother and younger sister survive in the harsh wilderness. She has been carrying the weight of her family on her shoulders, even to the detriment of her own happiness. This is the core of her character arc and struggle through the entire story.

Jack is one of the sons from the neighboring homestead and has been quietly and secretly in love with Cora for a very long time. He finds himself tongue-tied to a fault whenever he is around her so he can’t figure out a way to let her know he’s interested. Jack’s younger silly Jilly gives him the grand idea of showing her his interest, which propels him to draw her beautiful pictures that he secretly leaves for her to find.

This is how their slow burn romance really develops and grows. Cora struggles with allowing herself to be interested in Jack because she feels a loyalty to her family and believes that if she finds someone to have in her life, that her brother and sister wouldn’t be able to get by without her.

Jack is one of those amazing characters that is sweet and understanding, but also very tough when the moments call for it. He comes to her rescue a few times and these are some of the experiences that really help Cora start to break down her walls and allow herself to start entertaining the idea of marriage.

I love settings like this where the characters are pioneers in an area during a time of intense struggle. They have to grow and make everything for themselves which requires a certain set of skills and determination. Christie always does an amazing job in these stories of giving the characters that due credit and allowing them to shine in their own lights within these settings.

A beautiful story of growth for both Cora and Jack and many reminders that it’s alright to let ourselves be happy, too.

Publisher’s Blurb:

When her parents died, Cora promised her ma that she’d look out for her siblings, and she has. She runs the family homestead like a military general, locking away all dreams for her future, at least until her siblings are married and no longer need her. She has no time for love and no wish to expose her fragile heart again after it was broken five years ago.

Neighbor Jack Brooks has been in love with Cora for years, but he didn’t realize it until it was too late: first she was courting another man, then she lost her parents. She may not be seeing anyone now, but that doesn’t mean she’ll stay single forever. And Jack can’t risk missing his chance again.

Winning her heart seems impossible when he gets tongue tied and can’t even write secret admirer letters—and she has emotional walls a mile high. But Jack has determination and a plan.

Thankfully, a picture’s worth a thousand words.

Winning Cora is a sweet and clean, boy next door, brother’s best friend, historical western romance with a strong FMC and a dyslexic MMC set in 1880s Wyoming territory.
