A Freddie and Grace Mystery: The Bachelor Spy by Pepper Basham

I really appreciated how the realities of war were woven into the story without overshadowing its hope. The wounded soldiers, the uncertainty faced by families waiting at home, and the emotional weight carried by everyone involved added depth to the story while still allowing moments of humor and lightheartedness to shine through.

My Thoughts:

The Bachelor Spy was my first introduction to Pepper Basham’s Freddie and Grace Mystery series, and it certainly made me want to go back and read the previous books.

Set during World War I, the story blends historical fiction, mystery, espionage, and romance into an engaging adventure. Havensbrooke Hall has been transformed into a convalescent hospital for wounded soldiers while Lord Freddie Astley is away serving on the front lines. Lady Grace Astley is doing everything she can to care for those under her roof when strange thefts, suspicious behavior, and rumors of a German spy quickly turn her home into the center of an intriguing mystery.

Stephen Blake quickly became one of my favorite characters. His mission to uncover the spy brought plenty of suspense, hidden identities, secret passages, and unexpected twists that kept the pages turning. I also enjoyed the romance that developed alongside the mystery. It felt natural and never distracted from the larger story.

Grace was such a delightful heroine. Her compassion, optimism, and curiosity made her easy to root for, and I loved watching her refuse to sit back while mysteries unfolded around her. Even though I hadn’t read the previous books, it was easy to see why readers have grown attached to these characters. Their relationships felt genuine, supportive, and grounded in love and respect, which is something I always enjoy finding in Christian fiction.

The faith element was also woven naturally throughout the novel. Rather than feeling forced, it became a source of strength for the characters as they navigated fear, uncertainty, and difficult circumstances during wartime.

The mystery itself kept me guessing until the end, and the final chapters were packed with enough suspense and emotion to leave me completely satisfied. While I know I missed some of the character history by starting with book five, I never felt lost while reading. Instead, I finished the book excited to go back to the beginning and experience Freddie and Grace’s story from the start.

If you enjoy clean historical romance mixed with mystery, espionage, memorable characters, and encouraging faith themes, The Bachelor Spy is well worth picking up.
