My Thoughts:

I was impressed with the depth and suspense of this story. It is heavily focused on the story of Ruth from the Bible and the main characters are living out a modern version of this story. Kennedy was married to a man that lied about everything to her and when he died, all of his bad decisions fell on Kennedy’s shoulders. She was essentially held responsible for his crimes, even though she wasn’t formally charged. Her mother-in-low, Cora, befell the exact same situation as her husband was also involved in the same issues.

After having their entire lives torn apart, they are returning to Cora’s hometown with what little they have left to see if they can find her remaining extended family. But another terrible accident happens to them and Kennedy almost loses her life. But is rescued by a man that will forever hold her heart. Donovan is Cora’s late husband’s nephew, but none of the parties realize this for quite a while.

Donovan has his own sordid history and complicated present with being one of the trustees of their families inheritance, which also involves Kennedy and Cora. These are all the intricate webs that tie the characters together, but also create such fine points of contention. There is a lot to unravel in this one and my heart was in palpitations for most of the story. It was stressful, sad, and heartbreaking through many of the interactions.

I felt terribly for the way Kennedy’s life seemed to keep crumbling right in front of her eyes. But the continued support and love from Cora and Donovan, kept her as balanced as they could. While this story is filled with tragedy, it also has a very strong reminder of hope and trusting in God. Many of the characters have faith that runs deeply and they continuously try to remind Kennedy to trust in Him and let Him guide her to where she is meant to be. But she struggles with this immensely, as her trust in everyone is constantly challenged.

This is one of those books that will prompt you to listen a little closer to the messages He sends us everyday and remember that we are not in control of the things that happen to us, but we are in control of how we react to it.
