I love it when I read YA books that have me hanging on to every single page. Julie Hall accomplished that and so much more with this novel. The main character, Emberly, is mysterious, intriguing and all around a really cool girl. The book starts out with her as a homeless orphan trying to survive outside the “system” until she’s 18 and can finally start a life for herself. But her experience living on the street isn’t quite like others. She has these – moments – where she kind of slips into an alternate reality. It looks similar to her surroundings but is bathed in light and there are monsters here chasing her.
Without knowing what in the world is happening to her, she’s naturally weary of anyone getting to know her and makes every effort to try and stay away from people. Until one day she’s captured and taken to Seraph Academy where she learns she’s not actually some orphaned freak, but descended from an elaborate species of angel-borns. The foundational concepts in this series is fascinating and I found myself turning every page swallowing words as fast as I could to try and find out what she was, what was happening and all the fun stuff to be found in this story!
Then we have the main “love” interest – Steel. He’s an older student at the school with two sets of twin siblings that also live there with him and he’s extremely protective of them. His whole demeanor screams “Protector” but yet he’s so horribly mean to Emberly throughout most of this book. You can tell and feel that there is something brewing between them, but Hall did well in leaving only breadcrumbs and leaving me – the reader – desperate to read the next novel to find out exactly what happens with everything!
Several supporting characters have a front stage presence in this story that you could easily get lost in their own side stories, if Hall decided to do something like that, but your attention never quite leaves Emberly or her downright AWESOME powers that she has! Anyways – this story is stunning, the imagery is breathtaking and I love the unique personalities of each and every character – especially Tinkle. Yes, I said Tinkle, and I meant to. But you’ll have to read to find out who that is. Trust me, you will not be disappointed in this YA start of the Fallen Legacy series. Jump on in!
