I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
I’m not even sure where to begin with this book. Heat of the Everflame is the third book in a four book series and is one of the best fantasy realms I’ve visited in quite some time. Featuring an awe-inspiring cast of characters that will leave you wanting so much more time with all of them. A four book series that takes you through the most amazing journey of self exploration, sacrifice and found families that is devastatingly emotional and intense. Once you start this series, you will not be able to stop reading until the very end.
Welcome to the realm of Emarion, the land of nine realms, each ruled by a Descended King or Queen. Their kind were bestowed the rights to rule and are gifted with unique powers and abilities aligned with their realms.
- Lumnos: Realm of Light and Shadow – This is where most of the main story takes place and is where the main characters hail from.
- Fortos: Realm of Force and Valor – this is where the armies of the realm are trained and call home. They are strong and more ruthless than other realms.
- Faunos: Realm of Beast and Brute – this is a land filled with Descended that can communicate with all animals.
- Arboros: Realm of Root and Thorn – Much as it sounds, this realm is filled with those that can wield anything that grows in nature.
- Ignios: Realm of Sand and Flame – The mysterious dunes and desert of the realm with a leader that is as nasty as you might come across.
- Umbros: Realm of Mind and Secret – These Descended can you read your every thought and know all of your deepest secrets.
- Meros: Realm of Sea and Sky – Descended who rule over all water and sky magic.
- Sophos: Realm of Thought and Spark – The central knowledge hub of the realm and where all their history is recorded. Sophos either have the gift of perfect memory or electrified sparks.
- Montios: Realm of Stone and Ice – A dangerously mountain region filled with Descended that control rocks and stone as well as ice.

Throughout the realms, the Descended have ruled for a very long time and the mortals they have been entrusted to rule and care for are no longer enjoying the brutal treatment from the Descended or the poverty that’s striking their entire population. A rebel group has developed and is taking it in to their own hands to fight back against the Descended. A war is brewing and the enemy becomes less clear as each day goes on. There are evils within both the Descended and the mortals; finding the right direction is difficult, but the Ancient Gods (the Kindred) have introduced something into the war that no one expected. A leader to lead them all – or possibly to destroy everything in the process.
Like I said, this series is an epic journey through many realms and the characters experience all the stages of development in ways that I cannot share without giving away spoilers. What I do want to focus on for a minute is the romance element of this fantasy series. This features the SLOWEST of SLOW BURN you can imagine between the two main romantic interests, but every SLOW BURN interaction is almost ignitable in it’s tension and excitement. I’ve never been a huge fan of this approach, but Penn Cole makes every interaction worthy of the slowness of it all.
Plus, the main male character, Luther, is about as possessive as they come and he’s not afraid to let everyone know what belongs to him.
“She is a gift from the Blessed Mother herself. She is…”
“I gave myself to her the moment I met her, and I have not regretted it for a second. I have laid my life at her feet, and I would do it again and again, a thousand times over. She has my faith, my loyalty, my vow… I believe in her with everything that I am. There is nothing I would not do to see her fulfill her destiny. No matter the cost.”

The war has begun. Both sides demand Diem’s allegiance—or her death.
After her disastrous coronation, Diem finds herself at the center of the conflict between the Descended and the Guardians. With her newfound friends and the man she’s falling for on one side, and the mortals she has vowed to protect on the other, Diem must walk a careful line to save the people she loves… even from each other.
The mystery of her unusual heritage begins to unravel, sending Diem and Luther on an unexpected journey across the realms. The answers may hold the key to winning the war, but finding them will require her to face painful truths about her mother, her bloodline, and her fate.
Meanwhile, the Crowns have set Diem in their sights. Some could be her greatest allies—while others want her dead. To end their oppressive reign, Diem must sort friend from foe and risk it all to build an army of her own.
But a powerful figure in the north has plans that could change everything…
Heat of the Everflame is the third book in The Kindred’s Curse Saga, a four-book epic fantasy romance series that follows our fiesty, bad*ss heroine Diem Bellator in her fight against injustice, her struggle to survive in a royal palace full of betrayal and intrigue, and her journey of self-discovery and finding true love. This slow burn, enemies-to-lovers series is perfect for fans of unique magic systems, dragons and other mythical creatures, angst and romantic tension, and hilarious banter. This book will appeal to fans of plot-heavy, character-driven romantasy such as A Court of Thorns and Roses, Throne of Glass, From Blood and Ash, Gild, Shadow & Bone, and The Serpent & the Wings of Night.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR

HI! I’M PENN COLE
I’m a fantasy romance author preparing to publish my debut series, The Kindred’s Curse Saga, beginning June 1, 2023.
While my life has taken me through a lot of ups and downs, my love for reading and writing has forever been my true north. I’ve been writing stories since my childhood, filling mountains of notebooks with wild worlds and angsty romances. I received my undergraduate degree in Creative Writing, hoping to write the Next Great American Novel, but… well… we plan, Fate laughs. After a detour as an attorney and small business owner, I am thrilled to finally be pursuing my lifelong dream of becoming an author.
I’m a regular participant in NaNoWriMo, and I love meeting and supporting other new authors, especially female authors and BIPOC/LGBTQ+ authors. When I’m not writing, I love reading fantasy, rom coms, and non-fiction.
While I’m a Texas girl born and bred, I currently live in France with my husband, where I can usually be found sipping wine and creating fantasy worlds on my balcony.
