This was a deeply emotional read that really honed in on the impacts of relationships. A regency romance at its core, but with an insight into the less often explored nuances of romantic relationship within the regency setting.

My Thoughts:
This was a deeply emotional read that really honed in on the impacts of relationships. A regency romance at its core, but with an insight into the less often explored nuances of romantic relationship within the regency setting.
Nathaniel is the Earl of Westmarch and a man Beatrice was already feeling romantically attracted to when she briefly met him before. Now Beatrice, a vicar’s daughter, has been invited by Nathaniel’s sister Arabella, to stay with them for the season and have a true London experience presenting her to society. Her upbringing really has not prepared her for this experience, but she is sweet and humble.
As these two continue to be around one another, their romantic attractions deepen but Nathaniel is caught in a very difficult situation when his entire Earldom is at risk because of his wayward Steward. He must pretend to be courting the annoying Miss Fairbrooke and refuse Beatrice’s interest, breaking both of their hearts in the process. The damage done to everyone’s emotional state throughout this book was impactful and difficult to read at times. The painful moments for Beatrice were many and her hurt was put on display for audiences on many occasions. This made me so sad for her.
“In another life,” he whispered, so quietly she almost didn’t hear, “I would have chosen you. In every life. Without hesitation.”
I would say this is the first Regency Romance I have read where this level of emotional trauma is presented. Characters are repeatedly hurt by others’ actions, left confused as to why things aren’t developing the way the appear to be, and the lies are all stacking up. It does wrap up nicely and provides a well earned ending.
The sisterly bonds between Beatrice and Arabella, as well as the friendship with Beatrice and Gabriel (he’s Arabella and Nathaniel’s cousin) provide the comfort and respite from the painful moments. They were always there for one another as the drama unfolded, and I appreciated that Beatrice had that in this book.
An emotionally intense read that does remind you that things are not always what they appear to be and that trust is one of the most important pillars in relationships. Without trust, the rest of it doesn’t matter.

Publisher’s Blurb:
She fell in love with a man she’d never truly met.
Beatrice Colburn has spent her whole life on the quiet edges of society, content with her father’s vicarage and the gentle rhythms of Little Brambly. She met the Earl of Westmarch only once — but three years of his sister’s letters painted a portrait she couldn’t forget.
Now, invited to the London Season, Beatrice finds herself face to face with the man she’s admired from a distance. But Nathaniel Harland is not merely the brother his sister described. His warmth unsettles her. His burdens run deeper than she imagined. And someone is conspiring to take everything he has.
Armed with nothing but sharp eyes and a faith that refuses to look away, Beatrice must decide how much she’s willing to risk for a man the world says she has no right to love.
Winning Lady Beatrice is the first book in the Vows of the Heart series — clean, faith-filled historical romance set against the glittering world of Regency England.
