My Thoughts:

Gideon and Evangeline made for a very sweet reminder that childhood friends can easily become more. Evangeline is on her own for Christmas this year as her brother has to leave town for work. Not wanting her to be alone, he sends for their childhood friend, and Deputy of a nearby town, to collect her and keep watch over her.

Evangeline is filled with the sweetest nature. She is always willing to help people and be there for them. But when a stranger leaves his travelling sack next to her at the train station, she soon realizes again that her helpful ways always get her in trouble.

One of the central themes in this book was absolutely about how it’s ok to be a good person, but also how being kind can at times put you in difficult situations. Just because others take advantage of that goodness from time to time, doesn’t mean those that are kind are weak or naive. She truly loves to help others and ultimately that’s how the entire issue gets solved as well. But I enjoyed her sweet nature and how she was always thinking about others before herself.

The budding romance between Gideon and Evangeline was quite enjoyable as well. They grew up together with Gideon and her brother being best friends. But they haven’t seen one another in many years. This brings out all the feelings that both of them had from when they were younger and makes it even more intense. All the small hand holding and arms around shoulders make both of them realize their feelings for one another are stronger than either of them realized.
